Ecuadorian police launch major operations against organized crime
Ecuadorian security forces have conducted a series of major operations across Guayaquil, Quito, and Manabí targeting organized crime, extortion, and drug trafficking.
In Guayaquil, the Anti-Kidnapping and Extortion Unit (UNASE) carried out 15 raids, resulting in the arrest of 12 individuals. The group allegedly extorted entrepreneurs and professionals via WhatsApp, demanding between $1,000 and $5,000. Authorities noted that one suspect was allegedly directing extortion activities from within a prison.
In Quito, the 'Plan Protección de Quito' has deployed continuous operations in over 40 sectors. Recent raids in the San Roque district targeted properties linked to the 'Los Lobos' gang and micro-trafficking, uncovering suspicious passports and vehicle plates. Additionally, military forces in the Cotocollao sector apprehended a suspect believed to be part of 'Los Lobos' and seized weapons, drugs, and military clothing.
In Manabí, joint operations between the Police and Armed Forces led to the arrest of 12 people in Santa Ana for involvement in organized crime, resulting in the seizure of firearms and ammunition. In Salinas, two individuals, including a minor, were arrested in connection with a fatal shooting involving members of the 'Los Choneros' gang. In Bolívar, two more suspects were detained for extortion following a victim's report.
