Ecuador imposes curfew in four coastal provinces to combat crime

Ecuadorian Interior Minister John Reimberg has announced a new nocturnal curfew for the coastal provinces of Guayas, Manabí, Los Ríos, and El Oro. The restriction is scheduled to run from 00:00 on September 17 until 23:59 on September 30, 2026, prohibiting movement daily between midnight and 05:00. This measure is intended to facilitate security operations against organized crime and criminal structures.

No special permits (salvoconductos) will be issued, though exceptions are granted for healthcare workers, emergency responders, and accredited prosecutors or lawyers attending flagrant hearings. Media outlets may also operate during these hours if they are properly identified and accompanied by security forces.

In Manabí, police operations in Rocafuerte led to the arrest of three individuals, including a gang leader from 'Los Lobos' and a doctor accused of hiding a wounded suspect. This follows an armed attack on September 10 that killed Police Corporal Luis Xavier Ramírez and injured another officer during an undercover investigation.
