Ecuadorian political alliances shift ahead of 2026 elections

Political alliances are shifting in Ecuador ahead of the 2026 sectional elections. In Pichincha, the Revolución Ciudadana (RC) movement, Unidad Popular (UP), and the Partido Socialista Ecuatoriano (PSE) have formed a coalition. This alliance includes the candidacy of Alexandro Tonello for Prefect and aims to support the reelection of Pabel Muñoz as Mayor of Quito.

In Guayas, the RC has also coordinated with the PSE to register candidates, including Sofía Espín for Prefect, Fiorella Ycaza for Mayor of Guayaquil, and José Francisco Cevallos for Vice-Prefect.

Analysts describe these shifts as “strictly conjunctural” alliances. Historically opposing forces, such as the correísmo movement and Unidad Popular, are uniting primarily to oppose the current administration of Daniel Noboa and to ensure political survival following the suspension of certain political organizations.
