Ecuador's Attorney General selection deemed irregular; observers urge restart

An International Observation Mission (MIO) reviewing Ecuador's process to appoint a new Attorney General reported serious irregularities, recommending the contest be annulled or reverted to the earlier stage and that a new regulation incorporating international standards be drafted. Mission members Jaime Arellano and José Antonio Guevara noted deficiencies such as a constantly changing rulebook, lack of technical expertise among selection committee members, insufficient transparency, missed deadlines and inadequate mechanisms to ensure probity and independence.

The national anti‑corruption body, Comisión Nacional Anticorrupción (CNA), echoed these concerns, describing the contest as “a premeditated fiasco to keep the current interim fiscal in place.” The CNA also criticised the Consejo de Participación Ciudadana y Control Social (CPCCS), saying its members “do not guarantee this or any other contest” and calling for the institution’s removal. Both entities call for a restart of the selection under clear, accountable rules before the 2026 sectional elections.
