Ecuador’s Banana Exports Rise as Costa Rica’s Bio‑Fruit Shipments Grow

Ecuador’s banana exporters reported a 6.75 % increase in shipments from January to May 2026, reaching 181.43 million boxes. The growth was driven by higher production and strong demand in the European Union, Russia and the Cono Sur. The EU remained the top destination with a 33.85 % share and a 14.82 % rise, while Russia accounted for 21.36 % of exports. Export logistics relied on Guayaquil, Posorja and Bolívar ports, with UBESA handling the largest share. Richard Salazar, head of the exporters’ association, noted that the harvest “was 1.17 % above the previous year, allowing the export increase.” Trade adjustments, such as a reduced tariff for Chinese imports, also boosted shipments to China by 2.81 %.

Costa Rica’s state phytosanitary service recorded that in 2025 more than 31.4 million kg of organic produce were exported, led by pineapples and bananas. These bio‑fruit products continue to meet demand in premium markets abroad, reinforcing the sector’s role in the national economy.

Both countries are seeing positive trade trends in fruit exports despite logistical challenges and shifting market conditions.
