Ecuador's contract killing surge highlighted by murder of UDLA finance chief in Quito

On 11 June 2026, Santiago David Ávalos Páez, the financial manager of Universidad de Las Américas (UDLA), was shot dead while driving on Avenida Oswaldo Guayasamín in the Miravalle sector of Quito. Armed assailants opened fire, inflicting fatal head wounds, and the vehicle collided with a pole before the perpetrators fled on a motorcycle. The National Police have launched a specialised investigation, reviewing security‑camera footage and collecting evidence to identify the motive and the gunmen.

UDLA issued a public statement expressing deep sorrow, extending condolences to Ávalos' family and praising his professionalism and personal qualities. The university also thanked police for their prompt response and ongoing efforts to bring the killers to justice.

The killing occurs as Ecuador records a sharp rise in contract killings (sicariato). Ministry of Interior data show 17 cases between January and April 2026, a 70 % increase over the same period in 2025, even as overall intentional homicides fell 11.8 % in the same timeframe. Young men aged 25‑34 constitute the majority of victims, and firearms remain the primary weapon, according to the statistics.

Security experts stress the need for preventive strategies, stronger territorial planning and community participation to curb the growing trend of targeted violence.
