Ecuador's Quito and Guayaquil begin extensive road rehabilitation projects
The Metropolitan Public Mobility and Public Works Company (Epmmop) will start on 1 August a city‑wide road rehabilitation programme in Quito. Nine streets in the north, centre and south of the capital, especially those near Metro stations, will be worked on in phases, with partial closures and alternate routes. Work on the southern streets S41, S42, Hernando de Benavente, Diego de Palomino and Gonzalo Escudero will last between 30 and 120 days, while sections in Miraflores and the Borja Yerovi area will be completed within 30 days.
In Guayaquil, the municipal government opened a tender on 30 June to rebuild the heavily used Tungurahua Street. The project, budgeted at US$9.6 million and financed by the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), is slated for a 720‑day execution period. It will involve resurfacing, upgrading drainage and sewage systems, modernising lighting, burying telecoms, adding bike lanes and planting trees. Expropriations of properties have already begun, and the contract award is expected on 2 September.
