Argentina's VTV Reform Allows Checks at Private Workshops
The Argentine government, under President Javier Milei, approved a comprehensive reform of the Vehicle Technical Inspection (VTV) system. Decree 689/2026 amends Decree 779/1995, eliminating the requirement that inspections be performed only at official verification centers. A new National Register of Inspection Workshops (Registro Nacional de Talleres de Inspección Técnica de Vehículos) was created; any workshop, dealership or company that demonstrates the required technical capacity and is registered can carry out the mandatory inspections. Registration is digital, free and managed by the Secretaría de Transporte of the Ministry of Economy, with provisional habilitation automatically granted if the administration does not respond within the prescribed period. The reform also updates emission standards and technical requirements, and sets new inspection intervals: private vehicles up to ten years old must be inspected every two years, older private vehicles annually; passenger and cargo transport vehicles are inspected semi‑annually. The objectives are to simplify administrative procedures, expand service options, maintain road‑safety standards and increase competition among service providers.
