Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew marks 35 years on the throne
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew celebrated the 35th anniversary of his election to the Ecumenical Throne with a series of commemorative events in Constantinople. On October 22, 2026, a Divine Liturgy was held at the historic Church of St. George at the Phanar, presided over by the Patriarch and attended by high-ranking clergy, including Archbishop Elpidophoros of America.
The milestone was marked by various international celebrations, including a pilgrimage led by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and participation from the National Philoptochos Society. In Austria, the Holy Metropolis of Austria issued a message of gratitude, highlighting the Patriarch's work in promoting Orthodox unity, interfaith dialogue, and environmental protection.
In Greece, the celebrations included a formal dinner organized by the Hierarchy of the Ecumenical Throne and the Association for the Support of Romios Community Institutions (SYRKI). The Greek public broadcaster, ERT, produced a biographical documentary detailing the Patriarch's journey from Imbros to the Phanar, focusing on his impact on the global Orthodox community and his advocacy for human rights and environmental stewardship.
