Eczema management and common triggers

Eczema is a group of related chronic skin disorders characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed patches of skin. While not classified as an autoimmune disease, it involves an overactive immune response combined with a weakened skin barrier. Common forms include atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and stasis dermatitis.

Flare-ups are often triggered by genetics, environmental factors, and immune responses. Common triggers include allergens such as dust mites or pet dander, irritants like soaps, stress, and temperature fluctuations. Approximately 70% of sufferers have a family history of the condition, and it affects an estimated 31.6 million people in the United States.

Due to the role of temperature changes in triggering inflammation, there is growing interest in cold water therapies, such as ice baths, as a potential method to soothe itching and calm skin flare-ups.
