Ed Davey proposes tax cuts and social care reform
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has outlined key policy proposals during the party conference in Brighton, focusing on tax reform and social care.
Davey announced a plan to increase the tax-free personal allowance to £15,000 within five years. He also proposed raising the higher rate tax threshold from £50,270 to £56,000. The party claims these measures would remove two million people from paying tax altogether and provide most taxpayers with a £680 tax cut. Davey suggested these changes could be funded through a ‘bold new partnership with Europe’ to drive growth.
Regarding social care, Davey called for a system that ‘empowers’ disabled people rather than merely managing them. While he used personal anecdotes to advocate for a culture of empowerment and expressed opposition to disability benefit cuts, critics noted a lack of specific policy detail on how the party would address the social care funding crisis or implement these systemic changes.
