Ed Davey retains Liberal Democrat leadership after failed challenge

Sir Ed Davey has retained his position as leader of the Liberal Democrats after a potential leadership challenge failed to result in a vote of no confidence. Following the resignation of MP Charlie Maynard from his frontbench role, speculation grew that a formal challenge to Davey’s leadership would be triggered during a parliamentary group meeting.

Despite the internal pressure and discussions regarding the party’s recent polling—which showed support at 11% in a recent YouGov survey—no vote was held during the Tuesday evening meeting. Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper defended Davey, stating that support within the parliamentary group remains ‘overwhelming’ and calling for party unity.

The internal friction follows the party’s significant gains in the 2024 general election, where they secured a record 72 seats, though some members have expressed dissatisfaction with the party's recent effectiveness and ability to maintain momentum.
