Ed Mangano's prison sentence reduced to 10 years
A federal judge has reduced the prison sentence of former Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano to 10 years, a two-year reduction from his original 12-year sentence. The decision follows an appeals court ruling that overturned two of his five convictions related to a corruption scheme involving the Town of Oyster Bay.
U.S. District Judge Joan M. Azrack noted Mangano’s good behavior while incarcerated, including his role as a head chef and mentor to other inmates. However, she rejected defense arguments for a five-year sentence, stating that a shorter term would fail to provide a sufficient deterrent against “brazen corruption.”
Mangano, who served as county executive from 2010 to 2017, was convicted of using his influence to secure $20 million in loan guarantees for a contractor and accepting bribes, including a no-show job for his wife. His legal team expressed gratification with the reduction but indicated they may file an appeal.
