Ed Markey wins Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary

Senator Ed Markey, 80, secured the Democratic nomination for his U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts, defeating Representative Seth Moulton, 47, in a primary characterized as a generational showdown. Markey won with approximately 64% of the vote, successfully defending his seat against Moulton’s campaign centered on the need for new leadership and a departure from the political status quo.

A central theme of the race was the divide over transgender rights and sports participation. Markey, a long-time progressive, campaigned on his support for transgender athletes and his authorship of a Transgender Bill of Rights. In contrast, Moulton faced criticism for previous comments regarding biological sex in women’s sports, a stance Markey used to argue that Moulton was out of touch with the state’s progressive electorate.

Other veteran Democrats also successfully defended their seats in the primary. Representative Stephen Lynch, 71, won renomination in the 8th Congressional District, and Representative Richard Neal, 77, secured his seat in the 1st District. Markey is set to face Republican John Deaton in the November general election.
