Ed Miliband defines climate crisis as a national security issue

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has argued that the global climate crisis must be treated as a matter of national security. Speaking at the opening of Climate Week in New York, Miliband stated that the issue should be addressed by prime ministers, foreign ministers, and generals, rather than being left solely to environmental activists and ecologists.

Miliband emphasized the necessity of energy independence through clean energy, citing the fossil fuel crises following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and conflicts in the Middle East. He noted that climate and nature should be integrated into national security systems and threat assessments, as crises can rapidly impact supply chains, financial markets, and migration flows.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also addressed the discussions, calling for urgent action. He highlighted Australia's transition from a fossil fuel-dependent economy toward renewable energy, warning against the costs of inaction.
