EDEESTE adds 12 power transformers to boost Dominican Republic grid

The Empresa Distribuidora de Electricidad del Este (EDEESTE) announced a major upgrade of its electric distribution network with the arrival of twelve new power transformers. The first phase, delivering nine 50 MVA units from China at the end of August, represents an investment of more than RD$303 million. A technical commission will travel to China to inspect and certify the equipment before shipment. The transformers will be installed at sub‑stations in Higüey (138 kV), Romana Buena Vista, Villa Consuelo, Boca Chica, El Brisal, La Catalina, Cruz de Isleño and the new Higüey 2 facility.

Before the end of the year, three additional units—two of 40 MVA and one of 28 MVA—are scheduled for delivery to the Higüey 69 kV, Romana Pueblo and Los Mina 69 kV substations. The expansion aims to reduce overload, increase transfer capacity and improve service reliability, especially during peak demand periods, as part of the Dominican government’s broader effort to modernize the national energy system.
