Edeka maintains leadership in German grocery retail market
Edeka continues to hold a dominant position in the German grocery market, recently being named the best food retailer by YouGov for the sixth consecutive year. The retailer excels in areas such as freshness, customer sympathy, and service counters, including its award-winning meat departments.
As a cooperative organization, Edeka operates through approximately 3,200 to 3,400 independent merchants who manage their own local assortments and pricing. This decentralized structure distinguishes it from competitors like the Rewe Group. While both are cooperative-based, Rewe utilizes a more centralized management system.
In terms of market presence, Edeka maintains a market share of approximately 14 percent, compared to Rewe's 12.1 percent. Edeka reported a total turnover of 75.3 billion euros in 2024 across its network of roughly 10,900 markets.
