Edeka market in Millingen to close by end‑2026

The sole Edeka supermarket in the village of Millingen, Germany, is scheduled to shut its doors on 31 December 2026. Residents fear the loss of a key shopping venue that also serves as a social hub for elderly, disabled and isolated citizens.

The closure will eliminate around 20 jobs and is expected to reduce local purchasing power, further straining the rural economy. Community concerns are heightened by the planned Betuwe railway line and the associated level‑crossing closure, which could increase travel distances and weaken connectivity for the village.

Local officials and the current tenant, Herr Gommers, stress that the market’s staff have built strong community ties, and the shutdown is seen as a blow to both employment and social cohesion in the area.
