Edeka introduces new price guarantee labeling for private label products

Edeka, Germany’s largest supermarket chain, is implementing several strategic changes regarding pricing and product labeling. The company is introducing a new red seal for its ‘Gut & Günstig’ private label to signify a price guarantee, aiming to demonstrate competitiveness against discounters. This seal is expected to appear on approximately 3,000 products, including items like Gouda cheese and salami pizza.

Retail practices at Edeka vary significantly by location because the company operates as a cooperative of approximately 3,400 independent merchants. This structure leads to price differences between individual stores and can result in discrepancies between shelf prices and checkout totals. Additionally, some stores utilize discount stickers for products approaching their expiration dates, offering savings of 30 to 50 percent to reduce food waste.

Consumers should also be aware of shrinkflation, where manufacturers reduce product volume while maintaining similar packaging and prices. While Edeka and Rewe are often compared, they are entirely separate entities; Edeka holds a larger market share in Germany with approximately 28 percent, while Rewe operates under a more centrally controlled cooperative model.
