Edelény Castle Complex faces potential closure due to funding shortages
The Edelény Castle Complex, a significant Baroque historical site in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, faces potential closure by January 2, 2027. The Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Assembly has decided to terminate its asset management contract with Magyar Nemzeti Vagyonkezelő Zrt. because state funding for the site's 2027 operations has not yet been secured.
While the state provided 260 million forints to cover costs through December 31, 2026, no guaranteed support exists for the following year. The county assembly president, Boglárka Bánné Gál, noted that the decision is driven by contractual deadlines, though the closure is not necessarily permanent. If necessary funds are secured within the next 60 days, negotiations regarding continued operation may resume.
The financial uncertainty directly threatens the jobs of 18 employees and could impact local tourism, including nearby restaurants and accommodations, as the complex is a major attraction in the Edelény region.
