Eden Prairie implements enhanced security after recent shootings

Eden Prairie city and school officials have implemented enhanced security protocols following two recent shootings in the community. The first incident occurred on October 2 near Aerie Stadium during a homecoming football game, resulting in two injuries and the evacuation of the stadium. Five individuals have been charged in connection with that shooting, including an 18-year-old accused of firing the weapon.

A second shooting occurred on October 5 outside a Speedway gas station; while no injuries were reported, police are actively investigating the incident. To address safety concerns, the school district has introduced several measures for athletic events, including metal detectors, bag checks, a ban on large backpacks, and a requirement for valid student IDs. These protocols will remain in place for the remainder of the football and upcoming basketball seasons.

Police Chief Matt Sackett reported that the Eden Prairie Police Department is coordinating with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to improve inter-agency response. The district is investing approximately $2,500 in security staff and equipment to manage high-attendance events.
