EDESTE upgrades Los Mina substation, reduces outages in Santo Domingo

The electric utility Empresa Distribuidora de Electricidad del Este (EDESTE) completed a repowering of the Los Mina substation in the Los Mina Sur area of Santo Domingo Este. Residents and shop owners report a marked decline in the length and frequency of blackouts that had plagued the neighbourhood for months, noting that service is now more stable even during peak summer demand.

Despite the recent improvement, the sector continues to face deeper systemic problems. Frequent interruptions, outdated distribution networks, high technical losses and delays in installing new meters remain widespread across the Dominican Republic, causing economic losses for households and small businesses. Critics argue that the underlying issues in the national electricity distribution system persist beyond the localized upgrade.
