EDF and Engie offer weekend electricity rates up to 34% below regulated price

French electricity suppliers EDF and Engie have introduced weekend tariffs that can reduce the kilowatt‑hour price by as much as 34 % compared with the regulated tariff during peak hours. The offers target households able to shift part of their consumption – such as laundry, electric‑vehicle charging or water‑heater operation – to the expanded off‑peak periods on Saturdays and Sundays. The discounts rely on the Linky smart‑meter system, which records consumption by time slot and enables precise pricing. While the reduced kWh price appears attractive, the overall bill still includes subscription fees, taxes and weekday consumption, so the actual annual saving depends on how much usage can be moved to the weekend. Providers warn that households with constant weekday demand, especially those heated by electricity, may gain little from the scheme.
