Gravelines nuclear plant receives authorization for EPR2 reactor site preparation
The French government has granted the state-owned energy company EDF environmental authorization to begin preparatory works for two new EPR2 nuclear reactors at the Gravelines nuclear power plant in the Nord department.
The authorized activities include site servicing, construction of facilities, earthworks, ground reinforcement, and the creation of a watertight enclosure beneath the future industrial block. Other planned works involve relocating the plant's rail terminal, constructing an intake channel, and building a new public information center. The project also includes the relocation of protected flora and fauna during favorable periods.
EDF clarified that this decree does not constitute a final building permit for the reactors themselves, nor does it allow for the construction of buildings intended to house nuclear materials or safety-critical equipment. Environmental monitoring will be conducted throughout the process under the supervision of competent authorities. A final investment decision for the EPR2 program is expected by the end of 2026.
