Edgar Sampie supports Mennonite arrival in Suriname

Surinamese ABOP Member of Parliament Edgar Sampie has expressed support for the arrival of Mennonites in the country, provided they adhere to local laws and regulations. Sampie noted that he sees no fundamental objection to their presence, suggesting they could contribute significantly to the development of the country's interior.

However, Sampie raised concerns regarding the political discourse surrounding the group. He suggested that certain ruling political parties may be attempting to shift public focus toward the Mennonites to distract from other pressing national issues. While he declined to name specific parties to avoid appearing critical of coalition partners, he urged the public to examine the underlying motivations of the current debate.

Sampie emphasized that the government must establish clear frameworks for such arrivals. He stated that considerations should extend beyond agriculture and economic development to include environmental protection, the interests of local communities, and workers' rights. He specifically highlighted the need for the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) to ensure that traditional communities are properly consulted regarding developments in their living areas.
