Edgar Selge releases novel about Siege of Leningrad survivor

Actor and author Edgar Selge has released a new novel, ‘Juras letzter Winter’, which explores the historical trauma of the Siege of Leningrad during World War II. The narrative is centered around the diary of Jura Rjabinkin, a highly intelligent 16-year-old who perished from hunger and cold in 1942 during the German blockade of the city.

The book establishes a dialogue between the deceased teenager and a fictionalized first-person narrator. This interaction highlights the profound disconnect and inadequacy felt by later generations when attempting to empathize with the extreme suffering of those who lived through the blockade. The story juxtaposes Jura’s struggle for dignity and survival against the narrator’s own life, using the diary as a catalyst to confront uncomfortable truths about memory and historical guilt.
