Edgewing opens first GCAP engineering facility in Turin

Edgewing, the joint venture responsible for the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), has inaugurated its first national engineering facility in Turin, Italy. The site, located at Leonardo’s Corso Francia complex, will serve as a hub for the development of a sixth-generation stealth fighter aircraft. The project involves a tripartite partnership between BAE Systems (UK), Leonardo (Italy), and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. (JAIEC).

The Turin facility is the first of three planned engineering centers; similar hubs are expected to open in the United Kingdom and Japan in the coming months. The aircraft is designed to utilize artificial intelligence to coordinate drone swarms and act as a highly connected node across air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains. The Turin site is projected to employ around 1,000 people by 2029.

Separately, Germany is reportedly considering joining the GCAP consortium. Following discussions between British and German leadership, the German government has expressed interest in examining the possibility of participation, though no formal commitment has been made. Tokyo has noted the need for coordination among the founding members regarding any expansion.
