Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono outlines six priorities for Climate Change Bill

Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), has outlined six essential priorities for Indonesia's upcoming Climate Change Bill. He emphasized that the legislation must move beyond normative regulation to become a practical legal instrument that provides tangible public protection while supporting sustainable development.

The six proposed priorities include:

1. Establishing clear, measurable, and regularly evaluated climate change targets. 2. Creating a dedicated institution to lead, coordinate, and oversee climate change policy implementation. 3. Prioritizing climate adaptation and community resilience to be on par with emission reduction efforts. 4. Securing adequate financing and budgetary support to ensure policy targets are achievable. 5. Ensuring a fair transition to a green economy that does not disadvantage the public. 6. Strengthening data and accountability to allow public oversight of targets, budgets, and implementation results.

Yudhoyono noted that climate change impacts, such as extreme weather affecting food prices and livelihoods, make climate policy a fundamental constitutional duty of the state.
