Tirana protests escalate into violent clashes with police

Violent anti-government protests in Tirana, Albania, have entered their 12th day, marked by intense clashes between demonstrators and police. Protesters, including students, teachers, and various professional groups, have targeted government buildings, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment, with stones and Molotov cocktails. In response, police have utilized water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse crowds.

The unrest has resulted in at least 13 reported injuries involving protesters, police officers, and journalists. One 28-year-old protester reportedly lost vision in his left eye due to a rubber bullet and was transported to Italy for specialized medical treatment. Authorities have made 35 detentions, including 22 arrests.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has responded by proposing a new legislative package to combat urban violence and anarchy. The package includes measures such as fines of up to 500,000 lekë for participants who refuse to disperse, criminalizing the wearing of masks during violent protests, and increasing penalties for damaging public institutions or schools. Rama also proposed stricter regulations for teachers to prevent them from involving minors in illegal protests.
