Albania: Government announces compensation for businesses damaged in protests

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced a new initiative to provide compensation to small businesses that suffered material damage during recent violent protests in Tirana. To facilitate this, the government has launched a dedicated service called ‘Dëmi im’ (My Damage) on the e-Albania portal. Businesses can register their claims by providing personal data, NIPT, and uploading supporting evidence such as photographs, videos, or invoices.

To ensure the integrity of the process, ten verification teams from the Tax Directorate will conduct on-site inspections to validate the reported damages. This measure aims to help businesses recover and maintain economic stability following significant losses.

The political situation remains highly volatile. Prime Minister Rama has accused the opposition and external forces of orchestrating the violence to destabilize the country and hinder its European Union accession process. Conversely, opposition leaders, including members of the Democratic Party, have called for Rama's resignation, citing excessive police force—including the use of rubber bullets—against students and protesters. Allegations of human rights violations and brutal police tactics have further intensified the domestic political crisis.
