Albania: Political tensions rise amid government reforms and Berisha's accusations
Albanian political tensions are escalating as Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha levels various accusations against the ruling government. Berisha has alleged that the Bradashesh prison is controlled by specific criminal interests and called for international monitoring following the imprisonment of Ergys Agasi.
In domestic governance, Prime Minister Edi Rama has initiated a new strategy for the Socialist Party, focusing on the ‘Social Albania’ initiative. This includes a planned national conference in November and a new mechanism for government-deputy interaction to improve public services. Rama has also instructed party members to engage directly with citizens to identify local issues.
Simultaneously, internal shifts are occurring within the Socialist Party following Erion Veliaj’s removal of Anuela Ristani from her position in the Tirana Municipality. This move has prompted Rama to hold working meetings with Tirana-based socialist leaders to discuss party organization and potential candidates for the 2027 local elections.
On a personal note, Sali Berisha announced his upcoming visit to the United States to attend a Republican Party conference in Texas as part of an international democratic union delegation, marking his first trip to the country since being designated ‘non grata’ by the U.S. Department of State.
