Edi Rama proposes gradual EU integration for Western Balkans

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has proposed a new model for European Union enlargement, advocating for the gradual integration of Western Balkan nations. Speaking at the ‘Intelligence on the World, Europe and Italy’ forum in Italy, Rama argued that candidate countries should not have to wait for full membership to participate in specific EU sectors.

His proposal suggests that nations could gain access to the single market, scientific research, and educational frameworks as they meet specific criteria, rather than waiting to close all negotiating chapters. Rama emphasized that candidate countries do not need veto power to ‘sit at the table,’ suggesting that removing the veto requirement for new members could ease the integration process for both the EU and the Balkans.

In a related commentary, Rama addressed the geopolitical situation in the region, specifically regarding Serbia. He argued that instead of isolation, Serbia should be brought to the ‘European table’ to ensure it adheres to regional standards and is held accountable, rather than allowing it to drift into the influence of other global powers.
