Albania: Edi Rama discusses tourism growth and development projects
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama is addressing several domestic issues ranging from economic growth to judicial reform and infrastructure development. In Brussels, Rama highlighted Albania’s tourism transformation, noting that the country welcomed 12 million foreign visitors last year, up from 2 million previously. He emphasized the goal of attracting high-end tourists and expanding aviation infrastructure, including plans for a new airport in Vlorë and seasonal operations in the south.
Regarding development, Rama addressed controversial projects, stating that investments in Zvërnec must follow scientific and environmental expertise rather than political pressure. He also noted that projects involving international investors, such as those linked to Jared Kushner, would be subject to transparent environmental assessments. Meanwhile, documents have surfaced regarding a large-scale residential complex in Yzberisht by Fratari Construction 1990, involving businessman Hajredin Fratari.
In the cultural and infrastructure sectors, a 6.25 million euro EU-funded project has begun to develop the Bylis–Klos Archaeological Park to boost tourism. Conversely, the Manchester City Football Academy project in Durrës remains stalled, leaving the site in a state of disrepair. In Durrës, plans for underground parking in the Taulantia promenade have raised concerns regarding potential impacts on archaeological sites. Finally, Rama proposed changes to the Criminal Procedure Code, arguing that pre-trial detention should be a last resort to combat a long-standing culture of judicial dependence on force.
