Edin Džeko retires from Bosnia and Herzegovina national team
Edin Džeko has officially retired from the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team following a UEFA Nations League match against Sweden in Zenica, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The 40-year-old striker, known as ‘Diamond’, concludes a historic nearly 20-year career in which he became the nation's all-time leader in both appearances (152) and goals (73).
The farewell ceremony at Bilino Polje was marked by high emotion, including a guard of honor from teammates and fans lighting flares in his honor. Džeko expressed his gratitude to fans, teammates, and his family, stating, “I am leaving happy because I know I gave my all.”
Due to FIFA regulations regarding international competitions, Džeko's iconic number 11 jersey will not be retired and will remain available for future players. The retirement marks the end of an era for Bosnian football, as Džeko was a central figure in the country's appearances at the 2014 and 2026 World Cups.
