Edin Dzeko to sign new contract with Schalke 04 at age 40

Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko, who helped FC Schalke 04 secure promotion to the Bundesliga, is set to sign a new contract that could run until 2027. The agreement is pending a final medical examination scheduled for early August. At 40 years old, Dzeko will join an exclusive group of players who have appeared in Germany’s top flight beyond the age of 40, a club that includes a handful of field players and several veteran goalkeepers.

Financially, Dzeko’s presence is valuable for the club. While his projected annual salary may reach €1.3 million, his commercial impact is significant: roughly 15 000 fans bought a Dzeko‑named Schalke jersey in the previous half‑season, generating about €600 000 in revenue for the club. His on‑field contributions this season—six goals and three assists in eleven second‑division matches—were instrumental in Schalke’s promotion, reinforcing his status as a key sporting and economic asset for the Gelsenkirchen‑based team.
