Edin Dzeko's Future at Schalke 04 Uncertain After Contract Expiry

Edin Dzeko (40), the record scorer for Bosnia & Herzegovina, is no longer under contract with FC Schalke 04 as of 1 July 2026 and is currently on World Cup break.

At the 2026 World Cup he captained his nation, becoming the oldest field player to start a knockout‑stage match, but suffered a muscle injury in the 0‑2 loss to the United States. In the second half of the 2025‑26 season he contributed six goals and three assists in eleven Bundesliga appearances, helping Schalke secure promotion, while recurring shoulder and muscle problems have limited his playing time.

Schalke are finalising their squad for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign and must decide whether to offer Dzeko a new contract. The club weighs his experience, fan popularity and on‑field impact against injury risk and a proposed salary exceeding one million euros per year. A decision is expected soon after the World Cup.
