Edin Dzeko's injury doubts loom over Bosnia at World Cup 2026

Bosnia's striker Edin Dzeko (40) has been unable to play in the team's opening matches at the 2026 World Cup, remaining on the bench against co‑hosts Canada (1‑1) and also missing the fixtures versus Panama and North Macedonia. The player suffered a shoulder injury in the March play‑offs against Italy, and his club Schalke 04 reports lingering fitness concerns.

Bosnia coach Sergej Barbarez said, "He has not fully recovered and is still dealing with problems," and indicated the decision on Dzeko's involvement for the second group match against Switzerland on June 18 will depend on his condition. Former World Cup winner Mats Hummels speculated that the injury might be worse than officially reported, suggesting a "smaller injury not communicated" may still be affecting the striker. Schalke is also weighing Dzeko's contract extension, which runs until 2027, on his physical state.
