Edinburgh Princes Street fire forces three‑week street closure as historic features survive

A fire broke out on July 9, 2026 at the former Debenhams department store on Princes Street in Edinburgh, prompting emergency services to cordon off the area. The city council announced that the affected section of Princes Street will stay closed for at least three weeks while structural engineers secure the façade and install steelwork. Vehicles, including trams, are barred from passing the building until the reinforcement is complete; a partial tram service runs from the airport to West End (Shandwick Place) and buses are diverted via George Street.

The original Victorian staircase and the stained‑glass windows that memorialise former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli have survived largely intact and will be examined for any further work. Council transport and environment convener Stephen Jenkinson said the remedial work is complex, weather‑dependent and that cranes cannot operate in high winds. He added that progress on the eastern end of the building is good and that the cordon may be reduced later in the week to allow the Boots store on Princes Street to reopen over the weekend.
