Edinburgh visitor levy poses financial risks to businesses

The Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA) has warned that Edinburgh’s new 5% visitor levy could cost local businesses millions of pounds due to operational complexities. The levy, which began on 24 July 2026, imposes a charge on overnight accommodation costs for up to five consecutive nights.

While the City of Edinburgh Council expects the tax to generate approximately £50 million annually for local infrastructure and services, accommodation providers are facing significant administrative hurdles. The primary issue involves the requirement to calculate the percentage solely on accommodation costs, excluding items like breakfast or parking.

STA Chief Executive Marc Crothall MBE noted that many booking platforms are currently unable to differentiate between these charges automatically. This has forced staff to manually correct guest bills, a process that can take several minutes per transaction, potentially undermining the city’s tourism appeal.
