Edirne markets see return of Bulgarian shoppers for winter season
Following the conclusion of the summer tourist season, Bulgarian shoppers are returning to the markets of Edirne, Turkey. Local businesses, particularly in the historic Balkan Market and large retail stores, report a gradual recovery in sales as customers seek winter clothing, food items, and household goods.
Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer noted that 3.7 million passenger crossings were recorded at border points during the summer season, which saw heavy transit from Turkish citizens living in Western Europe. With that peak period ending in late September, local merchants are refocusing on their regular clientele from Bulgaria.
Despite the resurgence in activity, traders expressed concerns regarding rising operational costs, including high fuel prices and labor expenses. Some merchants noted that while Bulgarian customers continue to visit, economic shifts and price levels present ongoing challenges for the local retail sector.
