Edirne Memorial Honors Romani Victims of Auschwitz Holocaust

On 2‑3 August 1944, approximately three thousand Romani (Romani‑Sinti) were murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. In Edirne, Turkey, a commemorative ceremony was held on the banks of the Meriç River, where participants placed flowers on the Meriç Bridge in memory of the victims.

Edirne City Council President Özer Demir and Roman Working Group President Turan Şallı addressed the gathering. Şallı said, "Alman Nazi dönemi 1933‑1945 yılları arasında 200 bin ile 1,5 milyon Çingenenin öldürüldüğü tahmin edilmektedir," and added, "Soykırımda öldürülen Çingeneleri rahmetle anıyor, soykırımların bir insanlık suçu olduğunu, yaşanmamasını temenni ediyoruz." He noted that Germany formally recognized the Romani genocide (Porajmos) in 1982. The event highlighted ongoing discrimination against Romani people in Europe and called for the protection of basic human rights.
