Edirne Military Hospital Martyrdom hosts commemoration ceremony

A commemoration ceremony was held at the Edirne Military Hospital Martyrdom to honor soldiers who died during the Balkan Wars and World War I. Organized by the Edirne branch of the Anadolu Gençlik Derneği (AGD), the event included the reading of the Turkish National Anthem and the Quran.

Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer noted that the site is one of the largest military martyrdoms after Çanakkale. He highlighted the extreme hardships faced by soldiers, including medical shortages and epidemics, stating that thousands of soldiers passed away there while seeking treatment for wounds sustained on the front lines. While 5,005 martyrs have identified names, it is estimated that approximately 42,000 unidentified soldiers are buried at the site.

AGD Edirne Branch President Abdülhamit İriş emphasized the importance of preserving this heritage for future generations, suggesting that students should engage with history through visits to such significant local landmarks.
