Edirne MP Ediz Ün returns to Turkey's CHP after customs smuggling probe clears him
Independent Edirne MP Ediz Ün announced he is rejoining the Republican People's Party (CHP) after a customs smuggling investigation was concluded with no criminal evidence against him. The probe began when a pickup truck linked to Ün was stopped on the TEM highway on 21 September 2024 and a large amount of electronic‑cigarette equipment was found. Ün said he was not involved with the vehicle, which had been entrusted to his informal adviser identified only as F. A., and he resigned from the CHP on 28 September 2024 pending the investigation.
The judicial process later determined that the case against Ün lacked any incriminating facts, while other persons connected to the seizure received fines and prison sentences. Following the decision, Ün publicly declared his return, saying, "Suçlular cezalarını buldu. Benim suçsuzluğum kesinlik kazandı. Baba ocağım olan Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi'ne geri dönüyorum," and confirmed that party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu had received him.
His reinstatement is expected to influence local political dynamics in Edirne and the internal composition of the CHP.
