Edirne sees rise in Bulgarian tourists as expatriate season ends
Following the conclusion of the summer season for expatriates returning to Europe, Edirne is seeing a renewed influx of Bulgarian tourists. This shift in traveler demographics is providing a boost to local commerce, particularly in historical bazaars and shopping centers such as the Balkan Market.
Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer noted that approximately 3.7 million passengers entered and exited the city's border gates during a three-month period marked by high expatriate activity. As the expatriate movement subsided in September, local merchants reported a transition toward serving Bulgarian visitors.
Local traders indicated that while the summer months were relatively slow due to heat and the transition of expatriates, the arrival of Bulgarian tourists is revitalizing the local economy. Some merchants noted that despite challenges such as high fuel costs and currency considerations, the increased foot traffic from neighboring Bulgaria is essential for sustaining business in the region.
