Edirne, Turkey anticipates record sunflower and rice harvests after seasonal rains

Heavy rainstorms this season have alleviated last year's drought in Edirne, Turkey, prompting local agricultural officials to forecast unusually high yields for two major crops. Edirne’s agriculture director, İslam Köse, said about 1.2 million decares of sunflower are now planted, with expectations of over 200 kg per decare and a total harvest of roughly 250 000 tonnes – a marked increase from the previous year’s output. He also highlighted the use of the ANIZA planting method, which adds 40–50 kg per decare, and the distribution of domestic sunflower seed varieties under the TAKE project to boost productivity and lower input costs.

In parallel, the region’s rice (çeltik) sector is also poised for a bumper year. Expanded irrigation from the Tunca and Meriç rivers has allowed the cultivated area to rise to about 500 000 decares, and officials expect total rice production to exceed 400 000 tonnes, surpassing last year’s 398 000 tonne yield. Farmers report stable disease conditions and are leveraging locally developed seed varieties to maintain yields of 750–850 kg per decare. Both harvest prospects are seen as vital for the local economy and for Turkey’s broader agricultural output.
