Edith Barr, Peruvian criollo music icon, dies at 90

Peruvian singer Edith Barr, widely known as ‘La Flor Morena de la Canción Criolla’, has passed away at the age of 90. Her daughter, Mily Salvany, confirmed the news via social media, noting that the family would provide funeral details in due course.

Born Nora Edith Barr García in the La Victoria district of Lima, Barr had a career spanning over seven decades. She began her musical journey at age 13 at Radio Nacional del Perú. Her international reach included performing at the Waldorf Astoria in New York at age 16, and touring countries such as the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, and Argentina.

Throughout her career, she recorded 32 long-playing albums and nearly 300 45-rpm records. Her repertoire included traditional Peruvian songs such as ‘Limeña’ and ‘La flor de la canela’. Beyond music, she appeared in the 1966 Mexican film ‘Santo contra el espectro del estrangulador’.
