Edith Cowan University study links AQP4 gene to sleep‑related Alzheimer’s risk
Researchers at Edith Cowan University’s Centre for Precision Health examined the aquaporin‑4 (AQP4) gene, which regulates fluid movement in the brain’s overnight waste‑clearing system. By analysing 13 common AQP4 variants alongside participants’ self‑reported sleep patterns, brain scans and cognitive tests, they found that the impact of poor sleep on Alzheimer’s‑related brain changes varies with genetic makeup.
Individuals carrying certain AQP4 variants showed faster grey‑matter loss when they slept fewer hours, while other variants were linked to structural brain changes when sleep onset was prolonged. The findings suggest that genetics and sleep habits interact to influence subtle brain and cognitive alterations years before Alzheimer’s symptoms appear, pointing toward more personalised prevention strategies based on both genetics and modifiable sleep behavior.
