Edmond Tapsoba named new Bayer Leverkusen captain
Bayer Leverkusen has officially appointed Edmond Tapsoba as the club captain for the 2026-2027 season. The decision was announced by head coach Carles Martínez, who selected the Burkinabè defender to lead the team ahead of their DFB-Pokal match against SV Wehen Wiesbaden.
Tapsoba, who joined the club in 2020, succeeds Robert Andrich. Martínez noted that Tapsoba has a strong connection with his teammates, the coaching staff, and the fans. Czech striker Patrik Schick has been named vice-captain to form a leadership duo with Tapsoba.
The transition follows a period of change for Andrich, who may leave the club this summer. Martínez indicated that Andrich is currently playing a secondary role in midfield and is no longer intended for a central defensive role under the new tactical setup.
