Edmonton Global faces municipal departures despite mayoral support
Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack expressed continued support for Edmonton Global, a regional economic development agency, despite the departure of several municipalities. Between late 2024 and 2025, Strathcona County, Fort Saskatchewan, Sturgeon County, Parkland County, and Devon exited the organization, with Leduc County, Gibbons, and Beaumont also initiating or completing exit processes.
Despite these departures, Knack maintains that a regional approach is more effective for economic development. The agency, currently led by CEO Daryn Edgar, has introduced new strategic plans focused on accountability and return on investment. While individual municipalities have different priorities, the remaining shareholders—including Edmonton, Leduc, Morinville, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, and Stony Plain—continue to fund the agency through fees based on population and tax bases.
