Edmonton Marathon apologizes for incorrect course measurement
The Edmonton Marathon has issued an apology after admitting the race course was incorrectly measured. Race director Tom Keogh stated that the marathon and half-marathon courses were approximately 674 to 675 metres longer than the intended distance.
The error occurred due to a miscalculation in how course adjustments were made to offset a detour involving a bridge. While organizers initially defended the measurements, they later recanted following complaints from participants.
Despite the extra distance, both the men’s and women’s fastest-time records were broken during the event. The organization is now working with Athletics Canada to determine how to handle the results, as the race is often used as a qualifying event for major competitions like the Boston Marathon. Rory Linkletter, a winner of the half-marathon, was among the participants who criticized the initial handling of the measurement discrepancy.
